ISTE ANNUAL CONVENTION 2010 REPORT

ISTE 21st Annual Convention
St. Joseph’s College of Engineering & Technology, Palai
The 21st Annual convention of ISTE Kerala Section was held at St.Joseph’s College of Engineering & Technology, Palai on 20th of November 2010 with the theme as “Innovative practices for Excellence in Engineering Education”. The convention with around 820 participants was inaugurated at the college auditorium by Sri. K. M. Mani, honorable Member of Legislative Assembly, Govt. of Kerala and in his inaugural address he urged the members of technical education teachers to face the challenges introduced by globalization by continuous discussions on innovative practices. He also urged teachers to mould a new generation who can make considerable changes in the public sector, industrial and agricultural development of the state.

The function was presided over by Dr. B Anil, Chairman, ISTE Kerala Section, who in his presidential address brought forward the idea of using innovative practices like Edusat, e-learning & Smart-Classrooms into engineering education in the state. He also pointed out the importance of research & higher learning among faculty.

Dr. C J Joseph (Principal, SJCET) welcomed the gathering. Dr .P J George, (Project Director SJCET Palai & Former Executive Secretary ISTE New Delhi), delivered the introductory address in which he stated that ‘ISTE Convention is the only forum where technical education teachers can discuss their matters under one roof’. H.E Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, honorable Bishop of Palai delivered the benedictory address.

The convention souvenir was unveiled by Mr. P C George, honorable Member of Legislative Assembly, Govt. of Kerala and requested the engineering fraternity to discuss about the importance of moral values in engineers and also asked for discussions on usage of innovative practices to uplift the 22% under privileged in the state.

Dr. Kuncheriah P Isaac, Director of Technical Education inaugurated the M. Tech program in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Production Management which is being offered in the college under the Mechanical Engineering department and delivered the keynote address. Msgr. Philip Njaralakkat (Chairman, SJCET) offered a felicitation regarding the vision of SJCET.

The sad untimely demise of Dr. D Balakrishnan, Former Chairman of ISTE Kerala Section & Former National Executive Council Member was remembered with heartfelt condolence and was conferred with the prestigious ISTE Fellowship.

In high regard to the services rendered to the greater cause of Engineering and to the ISTE, SJCET Project Director, Dr. P J George was conferred as the ‘Fellow of ISTE’.
The inaugural session concluded with the announcement of thirteen ISTE awards for the year 2010 by Prof. C.P. Sunilkumar (Secretary, ISTE Kerala Section) of which the Best Chapter award was bagged by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering & Technology, Palai and the Best Student Chapter award was bagged by College of Engineering Trivandrum.

Dr. K. G. Viswanadhan (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad), Dr. P. N. Ramachandran (Principal, Nehru College of Engineering and Research Centre, Thrissur) and V. A. Shamsudeen, (Principal Govt. Polytechnic College, Kalamassery) delivered invited lectures on various topics on the theme ‘Innovative practices for Excellence in Engineering Education’ after the inaugural function.

Various papers on the theme were presented during the afternoon session and the best paper of the lot was award during the general body meeting later in the evening.

MEDALLION AND CASH PRIZE FOR BEST PAPER

The paper presentations in the afternoon will be held as a competition for the delegates. The best paper shall be selected by an eminent jury for award of a medallion and cash prize.
